Where to buy on the Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol is not one property market or one lifestyle. These guides help you choose where you should live before deciding what you should buy. We’re based in Mijas Costa — where our knowledge is strongest — and work across Fuengirola, Marbella and the surrounding coast.
Choose the area before the property
Most searches begin with bedrooms, price and a location someone happened to hear about. We think that’s backwards. Start with the life you want the property to support: coast, village or town? Walk or drive? Golf, schools, marina or quiet? A full-time home or a second home? There’s no universally “best” area on the Costa del Sol — only a better or worse fit for your brief. That’s what these guides are designed to help you identify.
Start with the thing you won’t compromise on
Walk to the beach
La Cala de Mijas, Fuengirola and Los Boliches, and selected beachside communities.
Village life
Mijas Pueblo — traditional character, elevation and a pace away from the coast.
Golf
Nueva Andalucía and parts of Mijas Costa, depending on beach access and services.
A functioning town
Fuengirola, Marbella and San Pedro de Alcántara — very different versions of town life.
A marina nearby
Puerto Banús and Cabopino — completely different marina environments and scales.
A particular school
Start with the school — journey time may quickly rule out areas. Elviria and Nueva Andalucía can be relevant.
Mijas Costa — our home ground
This is where our local knowledge is strongest — and “Mijas Costa” alone doesn’t tell you enough about how a property will actually feel to live in.
La Cala de Mijas
A compact coastal town with beach, promenade and a walkable centre — everyday life close at hand.
Riviera del Sol
Residential Mijas Costa — hillside communities and golf nearby. Exact position changes everything.
Calahonda
A large area from coast to hillside, where exact position hugely affects walkability and car dependency.
Mijas Pueblo
The historic white village in the hills — character and elevation, a different pace from the coast.
Fuengirola
A functioning coastal town — promenade, year-round services and rail connections towards Málaga and the airport.
Cabopino
A smaller coastal setting at Marbella’s eastern edge — beach, dunes, marina and golf, near the Mijas Costa boundary.
Marbella — many markets, not one
“Marbella” describes a municipality containing very different locations and lifestyles. A search for property in Marbella needs another question: which Marbella?
Marbella
Town, Old Town, coastal neighbourhoods and the wider municipality — start here if you want Marbella but haven’t decided which part.
Golden Mile
The corridor between Marbella and Puerto Banús. Look beyond the label and understand where a property actually sits.
Puerto Banús
The marina and surrounding residential areas. “In” and “near” Puerto Banús can mean very different properties.
Nueva Andalucía
The Golf Valley behind Puerto Banús. Golf is the anchor, but schools, access and walkability shape the right choice.
Elviria
East Marbella — beaches, greenery and international schools nearby. Worth considering when school access and space fit the brief.
San Pedro de Alcántara
A functioning town with its own centre, boulevard and beach — on its own merits, not simply “near Puerto Banús.”
Property portals organise homes by location. We help you decide which locations belong in your search in the first place.
Thinking of selling in one of these areas?
These guides also help owners understand how buyers evaluate different locations. If you already own on the Costa del Sol and are considering selling, start with the relevant area guide or ask us for a free valuation — we’ll look at your specific property and location rather than a generic price for the wider area.
Compare & choose
Not sure which area is right? These guides compare the options:
Start with the area. The right property follows.
Tell us how you want to live: coast or village; walk or drive; town or residential community; golf, schools, marina or quiet; full-time home or second home. Once those decisions are clear, the right part of the Costa del Sol becomes much easier to identify.
